Aggie Softball Drops Final Game At The Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, 2-0, to San Diego State Sunday

LOS ANGELES – Despite a strong pitching performance from sophomore pitcher Mandy Harmon, the Utah State softball team concluded the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament Sunday with a 2-0 loss to San Diego State.The Aggies fall to 1-4 with the loss, while the Aztecs improve to 4-0 with the win. This was the second time that the two teams met in the tournament with SDSU taking a 10-1 win on Feb. 12. Overall, the Aztecs hold a 8-3 series lead over the Aggies.San Diego State wasted no time getting on the board, scoring one run in the top of the first inning. Once again, the bases on balls hurt USU as Hayley Miles started the inning with a walk. With one out, Miles moved into scoring position with a stolen base and went to third on a fly ball by Lorena Klopp. A Justeen Maeva single to right sent Miles home and gave SDSU an early 1-0 lead.In the top of the fourth inning, the Aztecs struck again, scoring one unearned run. With one out, Maeva reached on an error by Kaneshiro. Roshana Lavery came in to pinch run for Maeva and moved to second on a single by Jen Wisneski. Lavery was removed from the base paths on a fielder’s choice, but Wisneski moved to second on the play. Kamerin May came up big with a single up the middle that scored Wisneski to extend the San Diego State lead to 2-0.Utah State threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Bailey Micetich in the circle, senior shortstop Kelley Kaneshiro was hit by a pitch with one out. Junior first baseman singled up the middle as Kaneshiro moved to second. Freshman Brandy Karl came in to pinch run for Ventura. Micetich was able to strike out the next to Aggies to end the threat.Five different Aggies got hits, including three of the four Aggie seniors, including Kaneshiro, Megan McDonald and Shasta Tyteca. Freshman second baseman Kassy Uchida and Ventura also added hits.Harmon (1-3) pitched well in the loss, allowing only one earned run in a complete-game effort. Harmon gave up only four hits and struck out three. May earned the win for the Aztecs, improving to 1-0 this season. Samantha Beasley earned her first save of the season, pitching two scoreless innings in relief.Utah State remains on the road, heading to Las Vegas for the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic, Feb. 18-20. The Aggies will take on four teams from the Golden State, including No. 1 UCLA, No. 20 Stanford, Cal Poly and Cal State Northridge. USU will also face host UNLV.-USU-
