Logan fireworks show to get major upgrade

Logan’s Independence Day celebration is expected to have a whole new format this year. Normally, the city budgets about $57,000 for the pre-fireworks show at Utah State University’s Romney Stadium. However, this year the budget will increase to around $250,000. At a budget workshop on Tuesday, Parks and Recreation Department Director Russ Akina proposed a partnership with USU College of the Arts Dean Craig Jessop that would quite possibly bring thousands more people into Romney Stadium while currently a lot of people watch the fireworks from outside. “With that expanded program,” Akina told the council, “the ideas that came out of Craig, being able to bring in his expertise and resources in terms of what he represents and personnel that he is directly working with and their expertise, to help us bring a better program into the stadium that would also help us in terms of revenue.” Akina says Jessop will bring in his American Festival Chorus and orchestra along with a headliner, a big Nashville country western star with whom a contract is about to be signed. Members of the council agreed there is a good chance such a program would mean a sell-out inside the stadium and if that doesn’t happen it is still a risk worth taking for the evening of Friday, July 1.
