It has been a bit of a fight but State Board of Regents member Teresa Theurer says it looks like the Utah Legislature will approve a partnership between Utah State University and Washington State University for a Veterinarian School. On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Wednesday, Theurer said some members of the Board of Regents were concerned about how it would affect other pre-veterinary programs across the state and also about funding.”Utah State did a very good job of presenting to the Board of Regents,” Theurer explained. “They brought in people from Washington State University to explain what it was. “Through lots of discussion it came about that we are supportive of that. We made the statement that we were supportive as long as the funding was there for it. For now, the bill has passed and now it’s just waiting to get appropriation.”Theurer says this bill is one of the most exciting measures to come out of the 2011 session. She says she has a deep concern about employee compensation on the state’s college and university campuses.Theurer is also very excited about the progress being made at the College of Eastern Utah. Questions and concerns were raised when it was decided that the college in Price should become a Utah State University Regional Campus.Theurer said it happened when CEU was struggling financially in the wake of state budget cuts and USU had regional campuses operating successfully throughout the state.”It was tough to get it to all work out, to have the people in the Price area to be happy and want that to occur,” Theurer said. “Things have gone exceptionally well. “Enrollment on that campus has increased, people are happy, CEU’s been able to retain what people wanted them to retain: to be down there, to be a voice there, to retain the programs they had.”Theurer says the administrations at both USU and CEU deserve a great deal of credit for the success that has been achieved so far.
