Hatch prepared to be ‘most hated man’ in Washington

A new poll by UtahPolicy.com shows Utah Republicans are evenly split between Senator Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and his potential challenger Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-District 3, in the 2012 U.S. Senate race. Hatch says it is only a speculative poll and he thinks people realize he is the most senior Republican in the U.S. Senate who stands to be chairman of the most powerful committee, the finance committee, if Republicans take over the Senate next year. “You know I came to Washington as a fiscal conservative? I’m still a strong fiscal conservative,” Hatch said on KVNU’s Crosstalk show Thursday. “That’s the bottom line, from anybody who knows me. “I’m prepared to be the most hated man in that city, in Washington, in order to get Washington to reign in the size of our government. I’m prepared to do that.” Sen. Hatch said he is willing to make significant cuts in Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and other programs in order to rein in spending. The Senator will be in Logan Friday to speak at the annual Cache County Republican Party’s Lincoln Day Dinner. Prior to that, he will speak at 3:30 p.m. at Utah State University’s Emma Eccles Jones Education Building, room 131.
