Hundreds watch 20,000 bouncy balls drop from a helicopter

About 450 pounds of bouncy balls traveling nearly 55 miles per hour pelted the parking lot north of USU’s Romney Stadium Thursday afternoon. As part of Utah State University College of Science’s Geek Week, a record-settiing 20,000 bouncy balls were dropped from a helicopter more than 100 feet in the air. Not only did the event set a world record, but it was a science demonstration, with the bouncy balls representing electron radiation bombardment onto a satellite. The USU Society of Physics Students created the event in an effort to create more interest in physics and mathematics in local K-12 students. The crowd was filled with young school kids, college students and hundreds of community members. After the balls hit the pavement, children scrambled to collect bouncy balls to take home as souvenirs.
