Bri Campbell, Amber Thompson and Joe Canavan collect event titles on final day of Willie Williams Classic

TUCSON, Ariz. – Utah State track and field sophomores Bri Campbell and Amber Thompson, along with junior Joe Canavan each won their respective events on Saturday in the second and final day of competition at the Willie Williams Classic and Dave Murray Distance Carnival at Roy P. Drachman Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. Campbell won the high jump event matching her career-best mark of 1.65m (5-05.00), followed by junior Madison Jensen who tied for third in the same event with a height of 1.60m (5-03.00). Thompson won the pole vault competition with a new career-best mark, clearing the bar at 3.55m (11-07.75) as junior Rachelle St. Jeor was close behind with a mark of 3.25m (10-08.00). Canavan, who redshirted the indoor season, returned to outdoor action with a bang by winning the shot put with a throw of 17.59m (57-08.50). USU had 18 athletes finish in the top five of their event for the second-straight day, matching Friday’s total. Senior Ashlee Cannon and freshman Chari Hawkins ended the day in second and fifth-place in the 100m hurdles with times of 14.33 and 14.77, respectively. Junior Katelyn Heiner tabbed third-place in the 400m (55.54) with sophomore Aubrie Haymore trailing just behind in fourth with a time of 55.85. Senior Shannon Prince took fifth in the discus with a throw of 47.62m (156-03.00) while the Aggie women’s 4x100m relay team took fourth-place with a time of 47.87. The relay team consisted of Cannon, freshman Lauren Hoskie along with sophomores Mercedes Blackwood and Bailee Whitworth. For the men, junior John Johnson collected second-placeaccolades after clearing 4.92m (16-01.75) in the pole vault with fellow junior Max Hansen tying for fifth-place with a height of 4.17m (13-08.25). Seniors Eric Larson and Mercer Owen ended the day in third and fifth-places in the 800m with respective times of 1:53.76 and 1:54.52. Collecting a third-place finish for the Utah State men was freshman Jake Peterson in the 110m hurdles (15.30) while senior Armahd Lewis and freshmanTanner Hunt placed fourth in the 100m (10.63) and 400m (48.40). Utah State continues action by competing at the New Mexico Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on Friday, April 1. USU hosts its lone meet of the year, the Mark Faldmo Invitational on Saturday, April 16 at the Ralph Maughan Track Stadium.
