He loves pep rallies because 19 year-old Tanner Smith was Logan High School’s mascot, Grizzwald, his junior and senior years but now a pep rally is planned just for Tanner on Monday, April 25 at the Logan Recreation Center. The son of Kristi and Robert Smith, Coppermill Restaurant’s head chef, has been in the Primary Children’s Medical Center since November being treated for his second bout of cancer. Friend and nurse, Kathy Thunnell, says he is receiving intensive chemotherapy treatments until his health permits a bone marrow transplant. Thunnel says the pep rally includes a dinner catered by Coppermill plus an auction to bring financial support for the family. Auction and drawing items include Utah Jazz items, fitness equipment, and many other items. “We’ve got the Logan High cheerleaders and Grizzwald coming to lead the pep rally for Tanner,” Thunnell said on KVNU’s Crosstalk show on Monday. “Big Blue is making an appearance from Utah State. Tanner’s sister Kayley belongs to the Airbound Angel cheer group and they are preparing some cheers for Tanner.” The cost for the dinner is $10 and tickets for the drawings are $1 or six for $5.
