Federal grant will help Smithfield Fire develop ‘fire camp’

The Smithfield Fire Department has been awarded an $18,000 federal grant to assist with the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters. Chief Jay Downs says the funds will be used to purchase protective clothing such as pants, coats, helmets and boots for training new firefighters.The grant will also help the department develop a two-day “fire camp” for new and potential recruits as well as representatives from partner and stakeholder agencies. The award is the second the Smithfield Fire Department has received this year. The department also received a $52,000 grant for firefighter protective clothing, breathing equipment and large diameter hose.
