Lyons: Hatch in trouble because ‘people have simply lost faith in government’

Not everyone was surprised Monday when approximately 50 Tea Partiers stormed the offices of the National Senatorial Committee in Washington, DC to protest the organization’s support of Utah Republican incumbent Sen. Orrin Hatch.Utah State University political science professor and new department head Mike Lyons says Hatch has done a great deal to win Tea Party support. But he says a lot of members of the movement feel his 36 years is too long to serve.”It could have been. Thirty six years in Washington, in the current political climate, is difficult,” Lyons says. “People have simply lost faith in government. “Washington is anathema. Anyone who is associated with Washington, as Senator Hatch is, is likely to be in difficulty.”Lyons says another problem for Hatch is that fellow Utah Congressman Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-District 3, is thinking seriously of challenging Hatch in 2012.
