James: Hatch will need to make a case for himself

Will Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz, R-District 3, run against incumbent U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch in 2012? One local Republican leader says that remains to be seen. Former Cache County Republican Party Chairman David James, who is now a member of the party’s state central committee, says Chaffetz is closely watching the polls.James says the problem Hatch faces is that several years ago Republicans started to look like a party of big spenders.”Hatch followed with that flow,” James says. “People were very upset with him. They took their anger out for the same reason on Bob Bennett.”It’s not clear to me that Hatch isn’t going to be able to make a case that says, ‘I learned my lesson. I started as a conservative; I’m a conservative today. I deserve your vote,’ and people will nod their heads and say, ‘okay.'”But he says, on the other hand, there will be a lot of people who are not that willing to forget.
