Flags flying half-staff for former Utah first lady

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Gov. Gary Herbert is ordering flags to fly at half-staff in memory of former Utah First Lady Colleen Monson Bangerter. The order applies at all state facilities from sunrise to sunset Thursday. Bangerter died Friday night at her home from Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 76. She was married 58 years to Norman Bangerter, who served as governor from 1985 to 1993. She was active in the Mormon church, and presided over the Johannesburg South Africa Mission with her husband from 1996 to 1999. As first lady, she focused on children’s substance abuse and women’s issues. Herbert says in a statement that Bangerter excelled in her greatest role as a wife and mother, and was a radiant example to the people of Utah.
