Local found guilty of having child pornography, growing marijuana

Cache resident Jerald Goodsell was found guilty of growing marijuana at his home and having child pornography on his computer at First District Court Thursday. Goodsell, 58, was charged with five second degree felony counts of sex exploitation of a minor and a reduced charge of third degree felony for producing marijuana. Half of the original 10 child pornography charges were dismissed. Officers executed a search warrant at Goodsell’s house for pornography last fall. While executing the warrant, officers found a cabinet housing 13 marijuana plants.Goodsell grew the marijuana for his wife, who used it for medicinal purposes, Goodsell testified. Officers also seized Goodsell’s personal computer. While child pornography images were found on Goodsell’s hard drive by investigators, Goodsell said he did not save the images himself. Goodsell, an admitted pornography viewer, said he didn’t view child pornography but sometimes mislabeled images of children surfaced while he was searching for images of mature women on a file-sharing program.”The only way I can know what’s in the file is to open it and then delete it,” Goodsell testified Thursday.Whenever he came across one of these images of a child, Goodsell said he immediately clicked off the image and deleted it. The images found on his hard drive were probably the results of pop-up advertisements or some form of computer virus, he said. The prosecution disagreed. Attorney Spencer Walsh said, “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.” The prosecution pointed out Goodsell’s browser history, which shows specific child pornography images being opened repeatedly in a short period of time. Walsh also said if Goodsell had been concerned with avoiding child pornography and was repeatedly pulling up unwanted images in his regular searches, Goodsell should have changed what he searched for or how he searched for the mature images. Goodsell now waits sentencing on the six charges. – rachel@cvdaily.com
