USU’s Flanary Named WAC Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State senior forward Shantel Flanary was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Monday. This is the fourth career WAC Player of the Week honor for Flanary and her first this season.Flanary, a senior from Highland, Utah (Lone Peak HS), scored both game-winning goals as the Aggies went 2-0 last week with wins against Weber State (1-0) on Friday and Portland State (2-1) on Sunday. Flanary connected on two of her four shots on goal to score the only goal against the Wildcats and the second goal against the Vikings. She scored two of USU’s three goals last week.Louisiana Tech’s Caitlin Updyke earned WAC Defensive Player of the Week honors., The sophomore goalkeeper from Broomfield, Colo., (Broomfield HS), recorded the eighth and ninth shutouts of her career last week in a 4-0 win over South Alabama and a 0-0 tie at Southern Miss. Updyke recorded 10 saves over the two contests, including three against South Alabama and seven against Southern Miss.This is the second-straight season that Flanary and Updyke were honored by the conference the first week of the season with both earning the awards to open the 2010 season.Flanary is responsible for two of the Aggies three goals this young season. Last season, she was second on the team in both goals (9) and points (24). She now has 26 career goals and 63 career points. Both place her fourth all-time in the Aggie record books.This week, Utah State hits the road, traveling to the Centennial State for a pair of matches. The Aggies will take on Colorado College on Friday, Aug. 26 at 4 p.m. and will conclude the trip against Northern Colorado on Sunday Aug. 28 at 12 p.m.Utah State is now 2-0-0 this season. This is the third-straight season that the Aggies have started the season with a 2-0-0 record. The win also makes USU unbeaten in its last five matches against Big Sky Conference teams.
