Utah State Volleyball Loses To SMU in Four Sets

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Senior All-American outside hitter Liz McArthur (St. George, Utah) had 18 kills and a career-high 16 digs in Utah State’s four-set loss (25-21, 25-13, 23-25, 28-26) to SMU here Saturday in its final match of the Long Beach State hosted Baden Classic. For McArthur, it was her seventh double-double of the season and the 18th of her career. Utah State is now 4-6 on the season after dropping its third-straight match, while SMU improves to 4-5 with the win. Junior outside hitter Josselyn White (Smithfield, Utah) added 17 kills, 10 digs and six blocks for Utah State, while junior opposite side hitter Shay Sorensen (North Ogden, Utah) finished with 14 kills. Jessica Oliver led SMU with 19 kills and Sidney Stewart had a match-best 30 digs. SMU began the match on a 4-1 run and never trailed in the opening set as it hit .122 (14-9-41) and limited Utah State to a .075 (12-9-40) hitting percentage en route to the four-point win. SMU scored 10 of the first 13 points of the second set and coasted to the 12-point win as it hit .324 (15-3-37) and USU hit .143 (10-5-35). Utah State rallied from a 15-11 deficit in the third set to post the two-point win as it finished the set on a 7-3 run. USU hit .275 (16-540) here and SMU hit .289 (14-3-38). SMU opened a quick 8-3 lead in the fourth set and later led 15-10 before Utah State rallied with a 10-2 run to take a 20-17 advantage. The Mustangs answered with a 6-0 run only to see USU score six of the next nine points to lead 26-25 before SMU finished the match with three-straight points for the win. SMU hit .137 (16-9-51) in the final set and USU hit .160 (16-8-50). Utah State finished the match with a .164 (54-27-165) hitting percentage and SMU hit .210 (59-24-167). SMU also had one more dig (74-73) in the match, while USU had two more team blocks (11-9). Both teams finished with two service aces, while USU had six more service errors (8-2). Utah State will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 13 when it hosts in-state rival Brigham Young inside the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum at 7 p.m. -USU-
