A high speed chase Tuesday stretched through four northern Utah counties. It finally ended when a North Park Police officer spiked the tires of the evading individual’s car. Police Chief Kim Hawkes says the chase started in Davis County when an Adult Probation and Parole officer tried to contact 36-year old Jonas LaBlanc. LaBlanc fled with 37-year old Kayla Cooper as his passenger. Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Lee Perry says LaBlanc started traveling northbound, leading officers into Weber County. Perry says his troopers positioned themselves in Box Elder County. He says when LaBlanc was spotted continuing northbound and into Sardine Canyon UHP troopers attempted several traffic stops, but the vehicle kept increasing its speed through the canyon. Perry says multiple agencies tried to pull the vehicle over during the pursuit, without any success. Chief Hawkes said as his officers monitored the situation they decided to position themselves north of the last traffic light in Logan where there would be a stretch of highway and traffic usually thins out. They also closed westbound traffic at the light in Hyde Park. Hawkes says as LaBlanc continued through Logan he disregarded traffic lights and continued passing on the right of traffic. When LaBlanc reached 3200 North a North Park Police officer deployed the tire spikes and took out the vehicle’s right front and back tires. Hawkes says a second officer was staged just past the area and was able to pursue LaBlanc and his passenger until they stopped at 200 West and Hyde Park Lane. Hawkes says protocol was followed during the chase where if officers can safely initiate a traffic stop they will, but will employ more extreme measures, like the tire spikes, if the evading individual continues to ignore these attempts. Hawkes says he was pleased with the end result and that no one was hurt. LaBlanc and Cooper were taken into custody and escorted to the Cache County Jail.
