The Tea Party will likely come up with a candidate to challenge Republican U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch who is seeking a seventh term in the 2012 election. So what are the chances that Hatch will be defeated as former Senator Bob Bennett was two years ago? Utah State University Political Science Department chair Mike Lyons says Hatch expected to be challenged by Rep. Jason Chaffetz but Chaffetz decided not to take Hatch on.”If Chaffetz thought Hatch was beatable, Chaffetz probably would have taken him on,” Lyons says. “The fact that Chaffetz decided not to take him on suggests that Hatch probably is not beatable. “Hatch, to his credit, has prepared himself for a challenge from the conservative Tea Party wing of the party very effectively over the last two years.”On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Thursday, Lyons said if the Tea Party wants someone to run against Hatch they should soon come up with a specific candidate.
