Utah Senate President Michael Waddoups has received the American Cancer Society Action Network’s highest award for his leadership in the fight against cancer. Network President Chris Hansen says Waddoups’ work to end cancer in Utah has been pivotal. On KVNU’s For the Peope program Waddoups said he was honored with the award and believes it is the first time someone from Utah has been recognized for his or her efforts in fighting cancer.”We’ve done things in Utah in the last decade to encourage middle income people to get screened for pap smears, breast cancer check ups,” Waddoups explained. “We’ve just done a number of things trying to encourage people to do their part. I think cigarette smoking is one that everybody recognizes as being big contributors.”Hansen says last year’s tobacco tax increase led 24,739 people to quit or cut back tobacco use, including over 2,000 youth.
