Celebration set for Hillcrest’s 50th anniversary

A Friday celebration will recognize the 50th year of Logan’s Hillcrest Elementary School. All Hillcrest alumni, former teachers, staff, students and parents are invited to gather at 10 a.m. in the school’s auditorium (960 North, 1400 East). “We’re honored to have a building that has turned 50, not every building has that opportunity. We’re going to have a great celebration,” said Eric Markworth, the current principal and one of six to hold that position in Hillcrest’s history. The principal said the school’s students – current enrollment is 475 students — will present a program of history through song. “The songs will deal with not only the history of our school but the past 50 years of our country. Each of the grade levels have been assigned a couple of different songs from each decade.” He said part of Friday’s observance will be a community celebration from 6-8 p.m. with food, entertainment and fireworks. Markworth said the current staff averages about 16 years of experience at the school, making it one of the most veteran staffs in the Logan School District. “Laraine Anderson has been here over 31 years, Janae Jeppesen has been here almost 30 years and Barbara Whitaker and Julie Williams have been here over 26 years. “We did a DVD history with our fourth grade students last year and we learned there seems to be a connection to an elementary school that is unique in some ways. It’s where a lot of the formative years happen. We’re going to try and share some of those stories on Friday.” Markworth said the Hillcrest School was built with just four rooms. Through the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s different portions were added. The largest yearly enrollment on record is 550. LaVell Miller, the first principal, directed the school for 21 years, followed by Lee Colston, Dave Welsh, Paula Olson, Kim Evans and Markworth. All who attend the Friday morning assembly will be given commemorative key chain. For more information, visit their website
