USU vs Wyoming Post Game Quotes 10-8-11

Wyoming Head Coach Dave Christensen”We need to take a step back and evaluate our program. We’ve got a huge game next week against UNLV and it is the start of conference play. We have so many more things that we have to worry about than who we are playing, where we are playing or if it is a conference game or not. We went backwards as a football team today.”Are you going to look to make changes in the scheme?”Right now, I couldn’t tell you. We are going to evaluate everything and watch the film and evaluate everything tomorrow.”Did you have them right where you wanted them in the first few minutes?”Yes, it was great. We went down on our first drive and scored a touchdown. We took the ball and we thought that we could move down the field and score. Then we kicked off and recovered the fumble and from that point on.”Utah State Head Coach Gary Andersen”Winning is fun. That is the number one thing I can say. Our motto this week was to find a way to win the game and beat a Mountain West opponent. We made it interesting early on ourselves, and Wyoming took advantage of that.””We rolled on offense, defense and special teams. Special teams did a nice job. It is just a tremendous victory from an unbelievably tough minded group of kids who I am so proud of from the way they compete and practice everyday.””They (USU players) have taken a couple punches in the first five games of the season, there is absolutely no doubt about it. They have gotten up and they haven’t flinched. I asked them at the first of the year not to flinch and they didn’t flinch today, even when it wasn’t going so well. To me, this credit goes to the kids on the football team for their toughness, their “want-to” and their consistency. “Senior LB Bobby Wagner”I think it was a good win I think we played good overall as a defense and an offense, including special teams. I think it was a good win, with some big plays. That’s why we won. I don’t think we necessarily did anything different we just did special plays. We let a couple guys get open after that first drive and then we got it together.””Never did we feel down we were just down and that’s just life, life knocks you down. We were down 12 points early and we knew we had three more quarters so we weren’t too worried about it.””This definitely helps our confidence for conference play. You definitely want to be on a winning streak going into conference we are headed in the right direction right now.”Freshman QB Chuckie Keeton”We came out down 12-nothing, but the biggest thing was we didn’t panic. We had a few set plays, we just had to go out there and execute and it worked out. (QB Coach Matt Wells) my coach was talking to me on the phone and our first seven drives we scored on every single drive so that was the biggest thing for us. We just wanted to put up as many points as we could.”On improved passing game:”I was very excited all week we worked on it and it just gave us confidence not only in are passing game but our offense got the ball, our offensive line got us some confidence, and our receivers got a lot more confidence just because they knew they were going to be relied on and leaned upon to make some big plays and it worked out nicely for us.”On huge holes opened by the offensive line:”I mean its not even tonight, the offensive line has been doing a tremendous job all season and we just have to carry it over to WAC competition, and increase our intensity, I think we could have a chance of winning the WAC championship.”I just have to run whatever our coaches want us to, I know the offense is not built around me its built around our offense, and we have great running backs and great receivers and it worked out great tonight.”Junior RB Robert Turbin”It was a big game for us as a team, not only for our offense, but all week we just talked about staying with it, continuing to do what we do, practice the same way and work hard the same way. Football is a long season at every level, it has its ups and downs. When there are downs, its all about how you can respond. During the course of a game if there is a bad play it’s about how you respond to the next play, same thing with the good. I think we are able to mentally overcome some of the challenges that we have already faced this season and came out ready to play today, and obviously got a big win.”On recovering from down 12-0 and fumble on kickoff return:”We got hit right in the mouth beginning of the game we got down 12-0. Just like football is a long season, it is a long game, it has four quarters 15 minutes a quarter, you’ve just got to keep playing, there are going to be ups and downs in a quarter. That was a down part of our game but its all about how you respond, we are down 12-nothing, so are we going to give up and give in, and go home? Nope, we have a great game plan and we haven’t even touched the ball yet. We just had to get that first drive in and gained some momentum, and got the crowd in it and we just keep rolling from there.”On Wyoming’s bye week:No we prepared all week we watched tons of film on these guys. That we could attack those weaknesses and be very successful in those things. Our offense is very complex, even if you have weeks to prepare for it, you never know what you’re going to get. You can go in and stick with the same stuff. But there is always something knew that we could do to open things up and we did that tonight and capitalized a lot of points. On working some frustration out from the previous tough losses:”Yes it feels good to smile for once I don’t think I smiled all week I just had to focus on winning this game. Coach said it Monday morning all he wanted us to do was focus on winning, so we just focused on that and got the W this week.”Senior RB Michael Smith”The game was a plus, we got the victory, we practiced very hard this week, like Robert Turbin said, it was the best practice ever. We were sharp, we were crisp, we were all into practice. We did a lot of good things on offense, on defense and on special teams and running the ball. Obviously, Chuckie Keeton did a good job passing the ball, the offensive line was great in protecting the quarterback and run blocking, they were making us holes everywhere and it makes running the ball much easier for us. We didn’t have to break so many tackles, we could just run for daylight. I am excited for this victory.”
