Local credit unions uniting to help fight hunger

Once again credit unions in Cache County have teamed up with a food drive to help make the holiday season a little brighter for local families in need. The credit unions involved are Deseret First, America First, Mountain America, USU Charter, Logan Medical Federal and Logan-Cache-Rich.Danny Brownell, manager of the Logan branch of Deseret First Credit Union who spearheaded the drive, says several other groups have joined in the effort this year.On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Wednesday, Brownell said the food drive was launched last Saturday when the Morning Rotary Clubs from both Logan and Smithfield got together.”They had three or four boxes full, as well as some cash donations,” Brownell said. “So we were excited to have it kicked off that way. Last year as a credit union branch, here at Deseret First, we accepted donations and were able to give somewhere between $500 to $750 to the food pantry.”Brownell says the public is invited to drop off donations of non-perishable foods at any of the participating credit unions between now and December 16. He says donations can also be made during business hours at the Eccles Ice Arena and the Cache Valley Transit District Center at 500 North in Logan. Brownell says the food pantry is badly in need of help this year because of the poor economy which has meant more families are in need.
