USU debaters win conference tournament

The Utah State University Speech and Debate team won its first conference tournament at Linfield College. The team competed against more than 20 universities from across the northwest at the 81st annual R.D. Mahaffey Memorial Forensics Tournament from November 11-13 in McMinnville, Oregon. Debate topics were about current events and changed for each round of the competition. Contestants were judged on various aspects of speaking, including persuasion and dramatic interpretation. Despite having only three returning members from last year, the Utah State team gave a strong performance with two students recognized among the top five debaters in the tournament. Mentor Tom Worthen says Justin Jerez was recognized as the top debater and Chelan Rogers was honored as the fourth best. The two combined efforts and took third in team Parliamentary debate.
