Hospital donation benefits New Discoveries Clubhouse

One in six people is affected by mental illness and one in 10 is affected severely enough that it disrupts their everyday life. Those people are the ones helped by New Discoveries Clubhouse, a place executive director Mike Cartee says individuals learn they are not alone as they rise above their illness.Cartee says the Clubhouse has been operating on little or no funding as it tries to get a permanent home where more people in need can be served. He says he’s grateful for a recent $5,000 grant from Intermountain Healthcare which he says will go a long way to helping people in need.”That’s one of the things that we’re proud to stand on,” Cartee said on KVNU’s Crosstalk show Tuesday. “We have a program that has proven to work, proven to help. “We feel like when we ask somebody for support we’re able to do that with a good, positive outcome. Folks that do donate will be well aware that their dollar goes to do something that actually helps.”Toy Oldham, communications director for Logan Regional Hospital and executive director of the Logan Regional Hospital Foundation, says the Clubhouse is deserving of the grant.”The Discovery Clubhouse, they align very well with our community benefit initiative,” Oldham explained, “and that is to support organizations in the community that are providing rehabilitation services to those people, especially helping with mental health issues.”We kind of have a three-pronged approach: mental health issues, access to those people who don’t have insurance or who are under-insured and also chronic type issues we face in the community.”Oldham encourages other organizations to help New Discoveries Clubhouse. He says the clubhouse provides opportunities for members to rise above their mental illness and thus reduce the cost of health care in the community.Cartee says hopefully funding will come in to help New Discoveries Clubhouse continue to bring hope and healing to those with debilitating mental illness.
