Sheriff believes county’s failure to look ahead has hurt his office

Cache County Sheriff Lynn Nelson was hoping that more money would be allocated for deputy salaries in Cache County’s new 2012 budget. Nelson is pleased, however, that county council members say they will set aside approximately $300,000 to create a plan to best distribute the money to employees through step grades, promotions or other means. Nelson says county officials should have looked ahead.”The jail has brought in lots of revenue to the county,” Nelson says. “But it’s declining revenue and the council hasn’t taken any action to replace that revenue, and that’s what’s caused the budget to be tighter and tighter and tighter. “We knew this was going to happen when we built the jail and started renting out beds. Now those beds aren’t available to be rented out. Over the years no action has been taken.”Nelson says he just hopes the county will follow through because having a plan in place should not continue to be postponed.
