Christmastime is a great time for many people. It’s a time to spend with family, have a meal and open presents. Many people look forward to visiting with family over the Christmas holidays. But what about those who can’t visit family during this time of year? What about the international students whose family live too far away that it isn’t opportune for them to travel and visit them this time of year or those who are alone? What can these people do for the holidays? Rob Llewellyn, an advisor from the International Students Office at Utah State University, said that there are about 1,000 international students currently attending the university. Of these 1,000 students, Llewellyn said many of them stay here for the holidays although an exact percentage is unknown. In the past, sometimes the International Students Office has worked out a plan with a coordinating company or program to help provide a meal or something to do for those staying here for the holidays. However this year nothing has been planned for Christmas. The Cache Valley Visitors Bureau helps people find things to do when they are in town. Mike Bullock, with the Visitors Bureau, said that since Christmas is on a Sunday it’s going to be hard to find many things to do this year. Bullock said one thing that is good is some Asian restaurants are going to be open in case people are looking for a place to eat. Mandarin Garden is going to be open for its regular hours on Christmas day. They serve authentic Chinese on their menu. Another Chinese restaurant that is considering being open on Christmas is Formosa. They said they will know probably by Friday, December 23 if they will be open or not. For breakfast food, IHOP is going to be open. Also, for fast food Burger King plans on being open throughout Christmas day. These are some of the select few places that are going to be open for Christmas. Most restaurants said they are going to be open for Christmas Eve but not for December 25. So for those looking for a good meal on Christmas day selections are very limited. Call around and see but not too many are likely to be open. For those looking for something to do on Christmas day they can go down to Main Street and look into the windows of the stores that have gingerbread houses for the annual Parade of Gingerbread Homes. Some of these stores include The Book Table, Indian Oven and S.E. Needham Jewelers. For a full listing of stores participating in the Parade of Gingerbread Homes visit www.logandowntown.org for more information. Since there’s not much else going on, a final option could be grabbing a movie at one of the local theaters. After all, it’s always fun to go and catch a movie and on Christmas night there should be plenty of shows to choose from. So since the theaters will be open Christmas day this should be a perfect opportunity to buy some popcorn and sit back to watch a movie at the theater.
