Police: Phone was distraction in fatal Idaho crash of USU student

LOGAN, Utah (AP) — An ongoing investigation shows an 18-year-old Utah State University student was distracted by a phone when she died in a January crash in Idaho, minutes after posting on Facebook. Idaho State Police say following too closely, speeding and inattention were factors when Taylor Sauer slammed into the back of a slow-moving semi-truck Jan. 14 on Interstate 84 near Mountain Home. ISP Patrol Lt. Sheldon Kelley tells The Associated Press that earlier information indicating Sauer had not been distracted was based on a preliminary report that’s since been superseded. Kelley says Sauer was texting throughout her drive from Logan, Utah. A Facebook post from her reads, “I can’t discuss this matter now. Driving and Facebooking is not safe!” Another semi hit the back of Sauer’s car before running off the road.
