The Utah State University College Republicans have joined other student groups in opposing a proposed new student fee. On KVNU’s For the People program Monday, USU College Republicans President Mikey Rodgerson said the administration wants to build a new recreation center on campus complete with jacuzzi, climbing walls and other amenities. The estimated cost is $30 million reportedly to be paid for with new student fees.”If this passes then it will be in addition to the $415 which is currently in student fees, and that is on top of tuition,” Rodgerson said. “This semester there will be an increase of $30 per student, and then when the building actually opens it will jump to $75 per student per semester. “So over the course of four years over at USU, which you’re lucky if you get out in four years, that’s an extra $600.” Rodgerson says local businesses stand to be hurt if the new recreation center is built. A student vote is scheduled later this month.
