Fire at Deweyville recycling plant

Multiple units from surrounding communities responded to a large fire at the Hillside Recycling Center, 12090 N. State Road 38 in Deweyville Wednesday afternoon. According to Box Elder County Sheriff Lynn Yeates, “the building burned to the ground.”

Yeates says the fire started when some welders were working on an addition to a building. They were standing on wood and plastic when it ignited, quickly expanding to other areas of the building burning paper, plastics and Styrofoam. The fire quickly engulfed the 7,500-square-foot building.

Tremonton Fire Chief Steve Batis says the facility burned to the ground, destroying expensive machinery inside.

Thick smoke and explosions filled the air as the fire spread. The blaze sent heavy dark smoke into the air that could be seen from miles around, even in the Cache Valley.

The fire was reported at 1:45 p.m. and no injuries were reported.
