Several firefighting crews from Cache County joined forces with Franklin County fire crews Wednesday afternoon to battle a fire atop a grain elevator at the Valley Wide Cooperative, formerly Franklin County Grain Growers. The facility is located at 264 South State Street in downtown Preston. The cause of the blaze is not known at this time though it is estimated that some bearings or grain moving equipment at the top of the grain elevator failed and overheated. The call for assistance went out around 3:40 p.m. The fire spread to the roller room but did not affect the propane, retail or fuel areas of the operation. It does not appear there were any injuries in the blaze. More units were called out for assistance from surrounding communities about an hour after the fire started at the historic structure. The facility is badly damaged and crews battled the blaze into the night. This is early footage of the fire before firefighters arrived on scene. Video footage courtesy of Holly Jo Hull.
