Center for the Arts celebrating Earth Day with fun, activities, music

On Saturday, April 21 the Cache Valley Center for the Arts will present the second annual Earth Day Downtown.

“We are trying to encourage families and pretty much everyone to come out and enjoy the entire day because it is to stop and celebrate and enjoy the environment,” says Amanda Castillo, Program Director for Cache Valley Center for the Arts. “We just want people to be entertained.”

There will be kids activities, musical performances, information booths, vendors, and workshops, among other things. Some groups that will be there include Logan City, several clubs from Utah State University, local Gardeners Market and local businesses.

Earth Day provides an opportunity to embrace the world we live in and find out how we can all serve as better stewards of the planet and its resources. The event takes place one day a year but is an opportunity to educate and engage the community.

In conjunction with Earth Day Downtown, Logan City is giving people the opportunity to drop off old electronics. Electronic waste includes: batteries, cameras, cell phones, circuit boards, complete computer systems, CPU (tower), docking stations, external CD-ROM drives, external modems, fax machines, printers, L.C.D. flat screens, laptops, microwaves, monitors, palm pilots or other hand-held devices, scanners, slide projectors, stereos/speakers, telephone systems, televisions, typewriters, VCR/DVD Players, video recorders, and more. The Logan City Environmental Department is asking that no household hazardous waste, audio/video tapes, DLT tapes, or floppy discs be dropped off.

One thing children can do during the event is draw pictures with sidewalk chalk or play with recycled clay. They can also make a little noise with various recycled materials like drums, broom sticks and much more.

To help support Earth Day, businesses of the Logan Downtown Alliance are staying open late and hosting a Film Festival.

The event will be from 11:00 a.m. – 4 p.m. on 100 South (between Main Street and 100 West). Castillo says the weather is supposed to be nice on Saturday which makes for a good day to bring families out and have a fun time.

The Earth Day Downtown Street Festival will include: entertainment, music, arts activities, food vendors, hands-on environmental activities and booths for local environment & sustainability groups, Logan City, USU clubs, Local Gardeners Market, Buy Local Businesses, and more. The emphasis of this event is to inspire people to participate, no matter how big or small.

“We are excited to see this event develop into an annual celebration” said Wally Bloss, executive director of the Cache Valley Center for the Arts. “When it comes to the earth, we should all take the time to celebrate what we are doing right. It is a special day because our decisions today will have impact on our enjoyment of tomorrow. This event celebrates our local community, offers ideas and tools to excite change, and just have fun.”

Earth Day provides an opportunity to embrace the world we live in and find out how we can all serve as better stewards of the planet and its resources. Earth Day only happens one day a year but it is an opportunity to educate and engage the community. If the arts can help inspire change and engage creative young minds, the future is well worth it!

In conjunction with this event, Logan City will provide an opportunity for the public to drop off their e-waste.
