Utah State Women sweep 2012 WAC Track & Field Championships with first WAC Outdoor title

MOSCOW, Idaho — Utah State women’s track and field team captured their first ever Western Athletic Conference outdoor championship Friday and first outdoor conference title since winning the Big West crown in 1999. USU’s women collected 148.5 points at the 2012 WAC Outdoor Championships to win the title at the Dan O’Brien Track & Field Complex in Moscow, Idaho.

With the win, the Aggie women swept the 2012 WAC Track & Field Championships as they also won their first WAC indoor crown in February of this year. It also marks the fifth-straight year that one team has won both championships as Louisiana Tech won both the indoor and outdoor titles from 2008-11. It is also the first time since 1994 that the USU women have won both conference titles when they won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor championship and Big West outdoor championship.

Utah State’s men finished in second-place with 200.5 points which ends a three year title streak, while Idaho’s men won the crown with 219.5 points. It marks the first time since 2006 that the Aggie men have not won either the indoor or outdoor title in the same year. Fresno State’s men took third-place with 137 points followed by Louisiana Tech with 84. On the women’s side, Idaho captured second-place with 133.5 points followed by Louisiana Tech at (129), Fresno State (115), Hawai’i (111.5), New Mexico State (102) and Nevada (76.5).

Winning individual WAC titles on Friday for Utah State were seniors Daniel Howell (5,000m) and Lindsey Spencer (hammer throw), along with sophomore AJ Boully winning his second-straight WAC outdoor 400m hurdles title and freshman Jodi Williams taking top honors in the high jump. Spencer extended her school record in the hammer throw for the second time this season, throwing for a mark of 61.99m (203-04), which ranks her with the 13th-best throw in the nation this season. Spencer was also named the women’s Outstanding Field Performer for the championships. Williams used a personal-best height of 1.73m to win the high jump for the first time this season, while also ranking tied for the 10th-best mark in school history.

Utah State veteran head coach was named the women’s Coach of the Year while tying Idaho’s Wayne Phipps for the men’s Coach of the Year honors.

“It is always great to have the kind of accomplishments that we had here today,” Gensel said. “It was a collective effort to get the job done. We had a lot of people do a lot of great things. I couldn’t be prouder to be an Aggie right now. We will wait until Tuesday when the NCAA does their declarations and we will see who will get in and continue the season in Texas and then Iowa.”

Overall on the day, USU collected 27 first-team all-WAC honors and 30 second-team all-WAC accolades. For the entire championships, the Aggies had 37 first-team all-WAC accolades and 40 second-team all-WAC honors.

The NCAA track and field committee will determine who qualifies to compete at the first round of the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas on May 24-26. The field will be announced Tuesday evening. The finals for the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held on June 6-9 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
