Grabowska Finishes Tied For 20th-Place In Pole Vault On Day Two Of NCAA First Round Championships

AUSTIN, Texas — Utah State women’s track and field pole vaulter Sonia Grabowska cleared 3.92m (12-10.25) to finish in a 16-way tie for 20th-place in the pole vault on Friday, day two of the three-day first round action in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Track & Field Stadium in Austin, Texas.

Fellow senior Daniel Howell ran the 3,000m steeplechase in 9:03.38 to finish 21st, along with junior Bailee Whitworth crossing the finish line in 31st-place in the 200m with a time of 24.27. Freshman Nic Bowens ran a 21.70 in the 200m to place 39th, while sophomore Bryce Hall threw the hammer 51.69m (169-07) to claim 46th-place. Senior Lindsey Spencer participated in the discus but fouled on all three attempts.


Spencer will compete in the hammer throw Saturday, while Howell with run the 5,000m and Hall will throw in the discus. Spencer has continued her historic season by setting the school records in the hammer (61.99m [203-04]) and discus (54.48m [178-09]), and winning the WAC Outdoor title in the hammer. Howell went undefeated at the WAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships in 2012, claiming titles in the indoor 3,000m and 5,000m as well as the outdoor 3,000m steeplechase and 5,000m races. Hall has shown consistency and poise as he has led the Aggie men’s throwers all year with solid performances, capped off with WAC individual titles in the indoor weight throw and outdoor discus.


Utah State’s women are coming off a sweep of the 2012 WAC Track & Field Championships as they won their first WAC Indoor title in February and their first WAC Outdoor title on May 11.


Field events will kick off the action each day at the first round of the NCAA Championships at 10 a.m. (MT), while the running events will begin later in the afternoon.
