Blue Sox smash Terrapins, 19-1

SMITHFIELD— One game after putting up a whopping 22 runs, the Smithfield Blue Sox put up huge offensive numbers again, blowing out the Tremonton Terrapins 19-1 in five innings. The Blue Sox out hit the the Terps by a huge 17-3.

The first inning started off right for Tremonton when Cody Anderson led off with a base-hit.However, this would be their only hit until late in the fifth inning. Smithfield jumped to an early lead, hitting through the line-up, and scoring five runs – two of which came off of Tremonton errors.

“We hit the ball pretty well,” Blue Sox head coach Vic Bingham said. “And the times we hit it right at them they dropped it. When our guys are hitting the ball well that gives us a couple extra outs an inning you’re going to score a lot of runs. When you’re up that much t’s really hard to stay focused and into the game because you back off your running game, you don’t steal, and you don’t score off of past balls, it’s hard.

“The good thing about tonight is everybody here got a chance to get some AB’s (at-bats), and when you’ve been sitting on the bench and get a chance to play you want to show that you can really play. Our guys kept swinging it and did just that.”

The Blue Sox also showed off their defense, forcing Tremonton to go 3-up-3-down in the next three innings. Tremonton’s only run came at the very end of the fifth inning. The biggest inning for the Blue Sox was in the second, when they tallied eight runs and almost batting around the order twice. Designated hitter Chance Randell had a huge night going 4-for-4 with one HR, and six RBI’s.

“You just got to stay focused ,” Randell said. “Each one is important, you can always work on stuff for other games throughout the season. It’s important to keep that in mind that there’ll be games with situations where you’ll have to do some situational hitting. Our bats are rolling right now, we’ve scored over forty runs in our last two games, not that they were pretty games by any means, but hopefully we can keep that confidence and keep going.”

The Blue Sox will look to keep the scoring going with a busy schedule next week that will put them to the test.

“Our league is tough,” Bingham said. “The Wolverines haven’t been beaten yet in regular season. We beat them once in preseason, but they’re always good. They always bring their best game when they play us. They’re the team to beat for the league championship. Brigham and Logan are also good right now as well.”

“We have a really strong league this year,” Randell said. “I would have a hard time breaking it down. It could be any one of three or four teams Providence is really strong, Logan is coming on, Brigham has been good the last couple years, and the other teams you can’t sleep on, they’re really solid. It can be a good game anytime you play them.”
