Utah Festival Opera celebrates 20th anniversary this summer

LOGAN—This is the 20th Anniversary year for the Utah festival Opera and Musical Theatre. Founding General Director Michael Ballam said to celebrate the exciting milestone the company is mounting new productions of the most often-performed grand operas of the 20h Century – Gounod’s immortal “Faust” and Puccini’s timeless “Tosca.”

On KVNU’s crosstalk show Friday, Ballam said the season that opens July 11th at the Ellen Eccles Theatre, will also feature two blockbusters from the Golden Age of American Musical Theatre – Cole Porter’s “Kiss Me Kate” and Lerner and Lowe’s “My Fair Lady.”

“We’ve never had so many offerings as we’ve had this summer. We have more performances, more classes, more opportunities, and I could not be more excited … this is going to be a very happy birthday party for us,” Ballam said.

Ballam said the UFOMT is also commemorating the 90th birthday of America’s musical sweetheart with a fantastic concert “tribute to Judy Garland.” He said once again there will be backstage tours, breakfast with the stars, academy classes, and seven spectacular concerts.
