Firefighters have been busy throughout Northern Utah again. A grass fire ignited along State Road 30, also known as Valley View Highway, Tuesday afternoon near mile post 105 at approximately 1:40 p.m. The fire was contained to the side of the road, burning about 10 feet deep and about 100 feet wide. Officials needed to shut down the road temporarily so fire trucks could get into position to extinguish the fire before it spread any further.
“It was started by a discarded cigarette,” Logan City Fire Marshall Craig Humphries says. “It didn’t threaten any structures.”
It wasn’t much later when fire officials were called out to ICON Health and Fitness at 1500 South 1000 West in Logan at approximately 3:15. Smoke was seen coming from a dumpster adjacent to the building but under an awning.
“The fire was contained to the interior of the dumpster,” Humphries says. “It was compacting garbage when something inside ignited.”
Humphries says the fire was contained to the interior of the dumpster and it was pulled away from the building. The fire did not do any damage to any structures. There were no injuries to fire fighters or to ICON employees.
Humphries also said progress on the Millville Canyon fire could be wrapped up before Wednesday morning. It was 90% contained by 12 noon Tuesday and was expected to be completely contained and out by the next morning as crews put out the last hot spots.
While many fireworks restrictions are in place, Humphries urged caution for those areas where fireworks are still allowed.
“The other night we had a situation where a firework landed on the roof with cedar shake shingles,” Humphries explains. “The family went to bed and a passerby saw smoke coming from the roof.”
Humphries says the family was able to extinguish the smoldering embers before fire officials got there but it did burn a one foot hole in the shingles.
“That just really illustrates how dry it is,” Humphries says. “Restricted areas will be enforced and patrolled.”
