3 year-old dies from injuries sustained in Saturday afternoon accident

Three year-old Madison Urland passed away late Saturday night at Primary Childrens Medical Center after the car she was riding in with her 5 year-old brother Brayden Urland, 42 year-old mother Monica Urland and 70 year-old grandmother Marco Merrill was rear-ended and sent into oncoming traffic and a ditch at about 3100 South on Highway 89/91 Saturday afternoon. Madison was from Farmington.

The accident occurred Saturday afternoon at approximately 3:45 when the 1996 Toyota Corolla (previously reported as a Camry) driven by Merrill, a Bountiful resident, was hit from behind by 17 year-old Lindsey Brenchley, from Wellsville, who was driving a 1998 Ford Expedition. According to police reports, the Corolla was in the left lane heading north and moving at a speed lower than the posted speed limit. For a reason not yet made public, Brenchley was not aware of the Corolla’s reduced speed and slammed into the back of the vehicle.

The Corolla careened into oncoming traffic and clipped a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria driven by 65 year-old Stephen Richards, from Perry. The Corolla then went off the road and into a ditch on the east side of Hwy 89/91. Several cars immediately pulled over and tried to offer assistance until emergency responders could arrive. Madison and Brayden were extricated from the vehicle and transported to area hospitals.

Madison was later life flighted to Primary Childrens Hospital where she passed away due to her injuries sustained in the accident at approximately 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Monica Urland and Merrill were also transported to area hospitals and later air lifted to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray with head injuries. Their conditions are not known at this time, nor is Brayden’s condition though it appears his injuries were far less serious. Brenchley and Richards did not suffer any injuries in the multi-vehicle crash.

No arrests or citations have been issued at this time though an investigation into the accident continues as to why Brenchley failed to recognize Merrill’s reduced speed and slow down in time.
