Bobcat spikers dispose of Mountain Crest, 3-0

SMITHFIELD— Both the Sky View and Mountain Crest volleyball teams entered Tuesday’s match undefeated in the Region 5, but only one held on to the perfect record. The Bobcats showed their dominance as they won in straight sets for an incredible eighth straight match.

Sky View hasn’t dropped a set since August 25 giving them the number one ranking in the state.

“We are glad to have the win, but I thought that there were a lot of errors.” Sky View head coach Malayna Knowles said. “I would have liked to have seen us play a cleaner game.”

The Mustangs kept the score close in the first set, but Sky View carried a slim lead. Mountain Crest capitalized on second chances keeping the Bobcat lead small.

Sky View got on a run late in the set going up by five 24-19. SV outside hitter Maddie Day secured the set for the Bobcats with a kill. Day had 11 kills in the match.

“We weren’t really playing as a team it didn’t feel like it normally feels when we are playing,” Day said. “We finally just went and played our heart out. We were just going to play how we know how and not let them dictate how we play.”

Knowles said nerves carried into the second game.

“I guess I could take nerves into account in that first set but I would have hoped that we would have settled in and feeling a little bit better,” Knowles said. “The second set looked like the first which was a battle of who made the fewer mistakes instead of the best plays.”

Mountain Crest went point for point with Sky View in game two, but the Bobcats ultimately came out on top with a 25-22 win.

Sky View came out strong in the third set, going up 7-0 quickly.

“We started the third set better with blocking and hitting and taking care of things instead of waiting for who was going to make the mistake,” Knowles said.

Led by Day, the Bobcats used a streak to push their lead to eight at 10-2 and ten points at 21-11. Mountain Crest never really closed the gap in the final set, falling 25-13, and losing the match 3-0.

“Maddie’s one of the most driven athletes I have ever met,” Knowles said. “She knows exactly what she wants to have happen and she does whatever is asked of her to make it happen.”

The win is gives Sky View a 5-0 record in region, while Mountain Crest falls to second place with a 4-1 record.

“We hate to lose and we don’t want to let anyone take anything from us,” Day said. “We just go out and try to take every point and at the end we end up with a win.”
