OREM— A strong start wasn’t enough for the Sky View football team Friday, as the Bobcats were eliminated from the 4A state playoffs after a 41-31 loss to the Orem Tigers.
The Bobcats had everything going their way early.
Solid defense forced consecutive three-and-outs by Orem, and junior quarterback Braxton Godderidge wasted no time in leading the offense down the field for a 7-0 lead on a 35-yard touchdown pass to senior Daniel Lemon – putting the 6-foot-4 wide receiver over 1000 yards for the season.
Godderidge threw his second touchdown pass just two minutes later after the defense forced a fumble near midfield. On the ensuing play, he found Nate Payne streaking down the sideline for a 53-yard strike and a 14-0 lead.
A 37-yard field goal from Nelson Griffiths made it 17-0 early in the second quarter, and the Bobcats, the No. 4 seed from Region 5, seemed to be well on their way to an upset.
But the momentum was short lived as the Tigers stormed back.
A fumble by Lemon at midfield led to Orem’s first touchdown, and penalties hounded Sky View, keeping several Orem drives alive and allowing the Tigers pull within three on a 3-yard run.
Pinned deep in his own territory and desperate to keep the drive alive, Godderidge threw into coverage but the Tigers intercepted the pass and returned it for the score and a 21-17 lead – a lead that grew to 28-17 last in the third quarter.
The Bobcats cut it to three on Godderidge’s third touchdown pass of the day and a two-point conversion. A pair of Griffiths’ field goals tied the game at 28, and then gave Sky View a 31-28 lead with a little more than five minutes remaining.
Sky View was again unable to hold on to the lead though, as the Tigers marched 73 yards in two plays to jump back in front less than a minute later, 35-31. Orem added to its lead after forcing another Bobcat turnover, icing the game with a touchdown with less than two minutes remaining.
Sky View finished the season with a 5-6 record after having its three-game winning streak snapped.
