SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Thousands of Utah voters are hitting the polls before the close of early voting in the state.
Friday is the last day voters can cast their ballot at polls before Election Day on Tuesday. State elections director Mark Thomas says more than 350,000 early votes have already been recorded by voters who cast their ballots by mail and at early voting sites across the state.
Nearly 143,000 of those early votes were cast by mail or absentee ballot. Thomas says that final number is likely to be twice roughly 86,000 absentee and by-mail votes cast in 2008.
Thomas says elections officials are noticing about 6,000 votes per hour are being cast on Friday afternoon at polling sites.
Nearly 1.3 million people are registered to vote this year in Utah.
