Bear River Massacre victims remembered

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Victims of the Bear River Massacre were remembered during a ceremony just north of the Utah-Idaho line to mark the 150th anniversary of the deadly attack.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the names of 40 Shoshone Native Americans killed on Jan. 29, 1863 were read aloud Tuesday.

More than 200 people braved the snow to attend the ceremony hosted by the Northwest Band of the Shoshone Nation. It occurred at the site of the deadly tragedy near Preston, Idaho, about 100 miles northeast of Salt Lake City.

As many as 500 women, children and tribal elders were killed when Col. Patrick Edward Connor led the California Volunteers in an attack on a friendly encampment of the Shoshone near the confluence of the Bear River and Beaver Creek.
