Bear River loses close one to Morgan

It was expected to be a close battle with Region 11’s first place Morgan Trojans hosting the second place Bear River Bears. It was more than a battle – it was a war.

Morgan came out of it with a 82-81 win and kept their region record unscathed, playing clutch defense throughout the 4th quarter. The Bears and Trojans lit the scoreboard up in the first half, with Bear River leading at half 47-43.

Morgan battled back with the help from the Bears and their foul trouble, including a technical on Coach Casey Winters. Wade Miller did all he could scoring 38 points, but Morgan Trojan Jake Miles was one point, and one big shot better scoring 39.

That big shot occured in the fourth and was the dagger to the Bears. Bear River was clinging to a one point lead 80-79 with 45 seconds left in the game. The Bears played tough defense for about 20 seconds but Miles was able to shake loose a defender and was found alone on the left wing where he hit a three to give Morgan a two point lead.

Bear River had a chance to tie it with 26 seconds left after Kyle Zundle was fouled and went to the line to shoot two free throws. But the first one rattled in and out and Zundle hit the second freebie, to finish off the scoring.

Coach Casey Winters still feels confident in his team despite the outcome.  “I told the boys that it doesn’t matter who we play, because if we played like tonight then it will be very tough to beat us.”

The Bears now will play their final home game on Wednesday against Stansbury at 7 p.m.
