Rep. Draxler seeking to increase penalties of metal theft

The worth of metal has been increasing and along with that the theft of metal has also been increasing both locally and throughout the state. A bill sponsored by Rep. Jack Draxler, R-District 3, would increase the penalties for metal theft.

“Under the old law, the first offense is a Class C misdemeanor. We’re raising that to a Class B misdemeanor on the first offense,” Draxler explains. “On the second offense we’re raising that to a Class A misdemeanor which is substantially more potential jail time and fine…for the thief.

“Also, we are requiring the dealers to have better identification.”

Draxler says his bill is getting widespread support because the problem is widespread. He says it got a unanimous vote in committee and the bill is expected to reach the floor of the house this week, then go on to the senate.
