Worker killed in Brigham City roof collapse

A planned building demolition proved deadly for one of the workers Tuesday afternoon in Brigham City. The victim’s identity has not yet been released. Crews were on the roof at the old K-Mart building at approximately 990 South Main, preparing the building for demolition when the roof collapsed.

Dale Smith, public information officer for Brigham City Emergency Services, says the incident happened at about 3 p.m.

“There were four workers working on the building. They were on the roof preparing it for demolition,” Smith says. “As of yet we do not know exactly what the plans were, the minute detail (about how the collapse occurred).

“Our primary concern was to go in there to rescue any victims. We haven’t had a chance to talk to the workers and see, in detail, what their plans were. But it was to take down the roof in preparation for total demolition.”

According to Smith, one of the workers had gone into the building when the collapse occurred. The victim was located at 4:45 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The building is being demolished to make way for a new Utah State University Extension building.
