HYRUM– Comcast Cares day, an annual statewide service project of Comcast employees and community volunteers, is coming up, and the City Council discussed Tuesday how best to make use of the volunteers’ help. The effort in Hyrum will be centered on city parks and the Hyrum Senior Center.

City Recorder Stephanie Fricke encouraged council members to have any recruited community participants write the location of the project they prefer at the top of their registration form.

Mayor Dean Howard recommended each volunteer list their top three project choices to avoid a surplus of helpers working on the same project.

“If they all volunteer for the same one, we’re going to have a problem,” Howard said. “I hate to be negative; I’m usually pretty positive but if everybody signed up for the same park, none of the other projects would have anybody and we’d be overloaded.”

Brent Jensen, city administrator, said the event will impact the city budget with some costs. He was confident the funding will be found because of a large amount of interest and project support from community members. “The painting and some of the projects will require some investment but so far it looks good,” Jensen said.

The council previously had approved construction of a retaining wall at Blacksmith Park, a city park in its early developmental stages, as one of the day’s projects. Jensen said the ground at the site was recently scraped in preparation.
