Daines files for re-election, encourages others to file too

With the filing period ending Friday, candidates have been filing for the position of mayor and/or city council. Some are political newcomers while others are incumbents seeking extensions of their current terms. Holly Daines is one of the latter.

On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Tuesday, Daines said she would like to serve another four-year term on Logan City’s Municipal Council. But she also said she hopes a lot of people will enter the races.

“I think it’s nice if we have a variety of candidates that give people a choice. That’s how democracy works,” Daines said. “If people don’t have a choice they don’t have a reason to vote and choose and express their preferences.”

Daines pointed out that the way council members are selected in Logan City has changed in recent years.

“It’s not like you’re running head-to-head against one person for a specific seat. You’re simply running to be on the council and this particular election the top two vote-getters will have the open council seats.”

Daines said she feels the council has been reaching out to neighborhoods in recent years and she believes that’s great.

Daines currently serves as the council chair and said this summer she is especially happy with a project that started after she first took office – the beautification of South Main.

She said council members, in cooperation with Mayor Randy Watts, started looking for ways to help fund the project and found them through redevelopment area and community development block grants.

“With the combination of those funds, it’s been in the planning stage for three years, we’re finally doing that construction and I think that will really help improve our town and help with economic development,” Daines explained. “As people come in and they see that businesses are going in on South Main and that are improving it, that the city is improving that infrastructure there and that it looks better.

“I really think it will improve our economic development. It will make it beautiful for our citizens and I’m thrilled that the project is finally happening.”

Daines said she is most interested in quality of life issues, and although she is pleased with the construction of the trail system she would like to see it move faster.
