A big third inning proved to be the difference for Providence in a 9-3 win over Smithfield on Thursday at home.
Clinging to a 2-0 lead, the Wolverines put up five runs in the third to break the game open, leading by as many as eight before allowing three late runs to the Blue Sox.
Andrew Barker recorded right total bases with two doubles and a home run, batting in three runs to help the Wolverines.
Smithfield fell to 3-4 overall this season, while Providence improved to 4-1 overall.
The Blue Sox return to action Saturday when the Blue Sox host the Salt Lake Outsiders in a non-league doubleheader. Providence travels to Brigham City for a doubleheader in league play.
Action for both teams starts at 6 p.m.
