Trash fire gets out of control at pig farm

CLARKSTON – Multiple agencies from throughout the northern part of Cache County responded to a trash fire that got out of control Thursday afternoon at a pig farm east of Clarkston.

According to Cache County Fire District Assistant Chief Jason Winn, a small group of teenagers were burning trash in a burn pit at approximately 3 p.m. when embers from the fire spread to nearby boxes and to some dry grass.

“Boxes of cereal in the farmyard caught fire and some structures were threatened,” Winn says. The cereal is feed for pigs at the farm.

Crews from Clarkston, Trenton, Newton, Lewiston, Smithfield, Richmond and the Cache County Fire District all responded to the fire at 7740 West 10400 North and were able to quickly extinguish the fire.

The four teenagers tried to extinguish the blaze but suffered some minor injuries in the process.

“Some of them had first degree burns and smoke inhalation but they were treated at the scene and released,” Winn continues. No other injuries were reported.

Winn says the fire caused approximately $2,000 in damages, mostly due to the loss of feed in the fire.

According to a press release from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, a citation was issued to a parent for burning without a permit during a closed burning season.
