Mosquito populations on the rise

LOGAN — As summer winds down and students head back to school, mosquito populations are on the rise in Cache Valley. Even though there hasn’t been a case of West Nile Virus in the county, there has been in Southern Utah and traces of the virus have also been found in Box Elder County. On KVNU’s Crosstalk, Terrie Wierenga, Administrative manager for the Cache Mosquito Abatement District said this time of the year is when populations are at their peak.

“Right now this is mosquito heaven,” said Wierenga. “With the warm temperatures during the day, the fact that it’s staying warm overnight, and the wind is blowing too fast, we can’t get out to do and fogging to control them. Larvicide, with all the extra irrigation people are doing, there is just more standing water for our guys to try and find. So we are fighting a battle but the mosquitos are pretty darn tricky.”

Wierenga said right now is also prime time for mosquitos that can be carrying both the West Nile and Encephalitis virus. She said people should continue to wear long sleeves and pants when outside, at dusk, and wear an insect repellent. You should also get rid of any standing water around your home.
