Tips on choosing the perfect Christmas tree

A lot of people are out scouting for Christmas trees these days and everyone hopes to get the prettiest they can afford. Logan City Fire Marshal Craig Humphreys says safety is also an important factor to make sure you avoid a fire.

On KVNU’s Crosstalk, Humphreys said you should make sure your tree is as green as possible.

“The best way to tell is to look at the needles. If the needles fall off very easily, the tree is probably too dry and may not be a good choice,” he said. “So choose a tree that is green, that the needles won’t fall off easily or break. Then as you prepare the tree when you get it home, cut at least two inches off the bottom to open the tree back up so it can absorb the water. Then immediately stand the tree in a water base.”

Humphreys said maintenance is also important, so you should be sure to check the water every day and make sure the base is full.
