Bear River plays each game close but goes 0-3 at Sky View tournament

The final score said 49-47 in favor of the Jordan Beetdiggers over the Bear River Bears in the opener of the State Farm Tournament at Sky View High school. But what really beat the Bear River Bears was the Bears themselves, more specifically turnovers and fouls.

McKade Mitton scored a team high 13 points, but 10 of them came in the first quarter all while picking up two quick fouls and sitting out until midway through the second quarter. No other Bear reached double figures.

For Jordan it was the one-two punch of Jacob Ashman and Tanner Monson. Ashman had 14, while Monson scored 13 including a dagger three from the corner with just over a minute left that extended their lead from one to four. The Bears had the height advantage but Mitton and Jared Olsen could not stay out of foul trouble, and leading scorer Landon Cornwall never found his rhythm.

On day two of the State Farm tournament, Parker Lewis shined for the Bears scoring a career-high 23 points. Unfortunately for Parker and the Bear River squad, Provo had guard Kyler Soresen who shot lights out as the Bulldogs rallied in the second half and beat Bear River 58-52 in overtime.

Just like the first game of the tournament, foul trouble did plague the Bears throughout the game, but they were still in it late. That was until Soresen hit his eighth three of the ball game from the corner with about :20 seconds left in overtime. Bear River has lost back to back close games.

The final day of the State Farm tournament at Sky View saw a rematch of last years 3A semfinal match with a different result as the Snow Canyon Warriors beat the Bear River Bears 67-66 in double overtime. Parker Lewis picked right up from where he left off on Friday night.

He scored 22 points in the first half and had 30 total for the game. Landon Cornwall also came alive after a quiet previous two nights scoring 18. The Bears had a 66-64 lead with :15 seconds left but left a Warrior open in the corner and he buried his three point shot which would be the game winner after the Bears could not get off a clean shot.

This was the Bears’ third overtime game of the young season, which makes it that much more frustrating for Head Coach Chris Hunt that they came out of this tournament 0-3.

“At some point we will catch a break in these close games,” Hunt said. “Kids stepped up and made big shots but in the end we just didn’t do enough to come out with a win.”

The Bears are now 2-3 but easily could be 5-0. They will look to put themselves back in the winning column next Wednesday at Logan at 7 p.m. Live game coverage for the Bears will be heard on 104.9 in Box Elder County and kix96fm.com. Live game coverage for the Logan High Grizzlies will be heard on KVNU 610 AM/102.1 FM and on 610kvnu.com.
