Rallies for, against gay marriage at Utah Capitol

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Opponents and supporters of same-sex marriage are planning separate rallies at the Utah State Capitol on Tuesday.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports supporters of same-sex marriage are planning to gather outside the Capitol at 5 p.m.

Two hours later, opponents of same-sex marriage plan to rally inside the Capitol to defend Utah’s voter-approved constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

Utah has been at the forefront of the same-sex marriage debate since a federal judge overturned the ban on Dec. 20.

More than a thousand couples rushed to marry until the U.S. Supreme Court granted Utah’s request to halt the weddings on Jan. 6.

The state has appealed the federal judge’s ruling to the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. A decision is expected in a few months.
